Alex Van Pelt hired by Patriots For OC Spot

The New England Patriots are hiring former Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt for their OC position, according to Tom Pelissero.

Van Pelt, 53, will join the Patriots’ recently appointed head coach Jerod Mayo, and his coaching staff after serving 4 years as OC for the Browns.

Van Pelt was fired from his position with the Browns despite helping the team end the season off strong and getting a Wild Card appearance with Joe Flacco at QB at the backend of the season.

The Patriots current coaching currently has filled all their main coordinator spots, with the current New England Patriots coaching staff: offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington, and special team coordinator Jeremy Springer.

The Patriots had interviews with Los Angeles Rams pass game coordinator Zac Robinson, San Francisco 49ers pass game coordinator Klint Kubiak, and 9 other candidates, before hiring Van Pelt for the OC position.

Alongside being an offensive coordinator, Alex Van Pelt has also served as quarterback coach for most of his coaching career. With the run in the playoffs, Flacco had a purple patch and seemed like his old self, before losing to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild card, 45-14.

This could be beneficial to the development of Mac Jones or Bailey Zappe, if either of those two were to be the starting QB for the Patriots next season. There remains the possibility the Patriots could use their 3rd overall pick on a QB on players such as Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, or Jayden Daniels.

This will be a new era for the Patriots as they have revamped their coaching staff after saying goodbye to long-time coach Bill Belichick for a new start after a disappointing last few seasons for the accomplished team.
