Patrick Surtain II Receives High Praise From Von Miller

With the No. 9 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos chose to bolster an already loaded secondary by selecting Patrick Surtain II out of the University of Alabama. A three year starter for Nick Saban’s defense, Surtain II was regarded as one of the top prospects heading into this year’s draft, and rightfully so. Lining up against top SEC talent on Saturdays and having to practice against the likes of Henry Ruggs III, Jaylen Waddle, Jerry Jeudy, and DeVonta Smith throughout his three year career at ‘Bama, Surtain has already been exposed to NFL level talent. A cornerback with incredible intangibles and athleticism, Surtain II will look to make an immediate impact in Denver, and thus far respected veterans such as Von Miller think he can do just that. In an interview with NFL.com, Miller expressed praise for the Broncos first round draft pick saying:

“Patrick Surtain, that ‘PS2’ guy, he’s the real deal… He’s a specimen. He has great feet. I’ve seen throughout the years playing football, knowing the type of player he is, but this Patrick Surtain II, seeing him up close and personal, he’s the real deal. I’m excited to see what he can do…this feels like the resurrection of the no fly zone. No fly zone 2.0.”

Entering what may look to be one of the best defensive back rooms in the NFL, Surtain II joins the league’s highest paid safety in Justin Simmons as well as former All-Pro Kyle Fuller in what could make to be the scariest secondary Denver has put on the field since their 2015 Super Bowl run. With defensive guru Vic Fangio calling the shots for his third straight season, Denver will have all the tools necessary on defense to compete with high powered offenses, especially those led by Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.
