Patrick Mahomes Says He’s Still Learning How To Read Defenses

Patrick Mahomes
Uh, oh. Patrick Mahomes says he’s still learning how to read defenses. How much better can Mahomes actually get? That’s a scary thought. (Jay Biggerstaff/USA TODAY Sports)

Patrick Mahomes is on top of the planet. MVP, Super Bowl Champ, MVP of the Super Bowl; you name it, Mahomes has it. Patrick Mahomes is living the dream. There is still a question that needs to be asked. Is it possible that Patrick Mahomes will actually continue to get better? It’s a scary thought process. While Mahomes has all the physical tools in the world, the Chiefs quarterback says that he is getting better at the mental part of the game.

This clip is from The Shop on HBO:

That’s a scary thought. He’s only been playing quarterback since his Junior year of high school. The fact that Mahomes is just now learning how to read defenses is a crazy thought. It remains very possible Mahomes continues to get better. In fairness, the man is just 24. He should keep getting better.

This goes back to when Mahomes was coming out of the draft. The man had all the talent in the world. He just needed to be groomed properly. Enter the Chiefs with Andy Reid and all the supporting talent. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce sure as hell help. Mahomes was a big lump of clay and the Chiefs deserve credit for molding him into a star.

What’s next for Mahomes? For starters, a contract extension needs to get done eventually. He has two years left on his deal including a 5th year rookie option. I can’t wait to see the number he signs for. It’s going to be massive.

Next, you have on field goals. Can he hit 70 percent in a season? What about 70 touchdowns? 6,000 passing yards would be insane but he might need some help if his defense is really bad one year. If nothing else, there is no question Mahomes is the face of the league.
