Panthers Waive Matt Corral

It turns out that the drafting of Bryce Young spelled the end for Matt Corral in Carolina. Teams around the NFL are cutting down their rosters to 53 prior to Week 1. The Panthers have decided that they have seen enough on the former Ole Miss product and are waiving him from the active roster.

NFL Network’s Tom Peliserro was the first to report the news:

Corral, 24, was Carolina’s third round pick a season ago. He hasn’t taken a snap for the team yet during the regular season. It wasn’t exactly a solid stint in preseason either throwing for no touchdowns and one interception. It sounds like Corral has a spot on the practice squad if he goes unclaimed. That’s exactly what happened with Bailey Zappe who was released yesterday as well.

Corral was someone who I was semi high on during the draft process last year. He was listed as my QB2 during the 2022 NFL Draft. In hindsight, I wish I would have swapped him with QB3 Sam Howell in the rankings who is set to become the Commanders starter this year. Howell, in fairness, went two rounds after Corral in the draft so NFL teams had it wrong too. As more time goes on, it’s just pretty obvious that Corral is a smaller guy with a decent arm but has no real QB instincts. I’m not sure what more the guy has outside of being able to toss it deep.

Bryce Young receives high praise from Andy Dalton during OTAs

Bryce Young and Andy Dalton will open the season as the two quarterbacks in Carolina. It’s not a big surprise that Carolina decided to keep the veteran in Dalton over Corral. Young essentially took Corral’s spot as the small young guy. Except Young has far more upside as a Heisman Trophy winner to become much more.
