Today has been an emotional roller-coaster for Green Bay Packers fans. David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones both get released, then Josh Jacobs is signed. That alone is enough for one day, but the craziness continues as the Packers ink former Giants Saftey Xavier McKinney to a four-year contract. Ian Rapoport was among the first to break the news.
My initial thoughts are that I love this move for Green Bay. McKinney is one of the best safeties in the league and has been vastly underrated for years. Not only is he elite in coverage across basically all metrics, but he has been quite durable, playing all 17 games in two of the last three seasons.
For the Packers, the back end of the secondary has been an Achilles heel. Outside of Jaire Alexander, there isn’t a whole lot and the Packers have struggled to find that long term safety. With Xavier McKinney they get just that. An elite safety who should be able to stay on the field.
The $68 million price point isn’t bad either, especially for the type of player you are getting. McKinney will instantly improve this secondary and the entire defense. The question will then become whether it’s enough or if he can stay healthy.
It’s been a crazy day over in Green Bay. But overall, I think they have come out as winners, in large part due to this addition of McKinney. He won’t instantly fix all of the problems this defense has. But it certainly is a good step towards getting there.
