On a day filled with news of players signing with different teams, the Packers instead made headlines by releasing veteran tackle David Bakhtiari. David himself took to Twitter to reveal the news to the world in a rather heartfelt message.
The five-time all-pro was set to be a cap hit of just over $40 million. But now the Packers can save about $20 million in cap space while also taking on $19 million in dead money.
Even though this move helps free up cap space for the Packers. Its still one that certainly stings a lot. The guy was just the epitome of Green Bay and seemed to really get the city and its fans. This made David Bakhtiari a fan favorite in Green Bay.
You could also find him out chugging everyone in the entire stadium at hockey or basketball games. He was just the perfect player for the Green Bay environment, and it’ll be weird seeing him in a different uniform.
What makes this sting a little more though, is the fact the Packers passed on trading him just last year. The Jets were clearly interested and desperately needed some help on that offensive line.
Ultimately the Packers decided against the trade, valuing David Bakhtari just a bit to much to say goodbye. Now, though, they lose him for nothing while the Jets are still free to make an offer and bring him in for much less than a trade would have cost them.
If the Jets decide against signing Bakhtiari though, someone will be quick to scoop him up. Sure he may be 32, but its clear there is still some left in the tank for David Bakhtiari.
