I did not have this one of my bingo card. Did anybody? It turns out the Packers are the winners in the free agency sweepstakes for Josh Jacobs. Yes, the same team that had AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones one year ago. The former Raiders running back is signing with Green Bay.
This news was first reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.
In terms of the running back room in Green Bay, AJ Dillon is a free agent. It’s pretty safe to say he won’t be back after this deal. Aaron Jones is still under contract. The team is rumored to be trying to get him to take a pay cut. Maybe this deal has some lingering affects there. Time will tell.
While the fit appears to be an odd one on paper, maybe it isn’t. Green Bay has built an offense around Jordan Love and they very much believe in running the ball. Matt LaFleur comes from that Kyle Shanahan zone run scheme. They need a back that can carry the load and they clearly didn’t feel like Dillon could do it. Also, I’m not sure Jones can be counted on for a heavy workload at this stage of his career.
For the Raiders, the job is very much now there for the taking. Maybe they will still draft someone but as things stand right now, Zamir White is going to be the featured back in Las Vegas.
