The Las Vegas Raiders have been the definition of mediocrity for the past 20 years. There are plenty of things we can blame it on, from the coaching to the quarterback to the front office. In reality, none of those are the real problem in the Raiders organization. The real problem is none other than owner Mark Davis.
With a 2-7 record so far this season, the finger-pointing in the organization is at an all-time high. Fans are calling for Josh McDaniels to be fired and Derek Carr to be traded. As frustrating as it is, the players and coaches have been the blame for the past 20 years. Yet, it seems like Davis receives no criticism despite constantly being in hot water.
Just a few days ago, it was reported that the reason McDaniels’ job is safe is that Davis is ‘cash poor’ and can’t afford to fire their first-year head coach. I mentioned how this was a bad take, but it doesn’t change the fact that Davis made the wrong choice in hiring McDaniels in the first place.
McDaniels had a losing record with the Denver Broncos. He was accused of cheating and hadn’t been a head coach until the Raiders hired him. But despite his history and the 2-7 start, Davis still thinks he’s doing a fantastic job.
“I think he’s doing a fantastic job. That’s why I hired him,” Davis told the Las Vegas Review Journal. “We did an exhaustive search and found the person we believe is going to bring the Raiders to greatness.
Head coaches such as Brian Daboll and Kevin O’Connell inherited worse teams. Yet, the Giants are 7-2 and the Vikings are 8-1. There was a plethora of good coaching candidates last offseason, but Davis went for the worst one and is paying for it.
Apparently, it’s even worse working in the front office. Back in May of 2022, the former Raiders’ President Dan Ventrelle was suddenly fired with no reason why. Shortly after, Ventrelle dropped a bomb saying that Davis created a hostile work environment, and when he tried speaking up about it, he was fired.
Ventrelle wasn’t the only one to make this accusation. Nicole Adams, a former Raiders human resources employee, also came out claiming Davis created a toxic environment. The team tried to avoid paying workers overtime, and Adams said it was her job to design job descriptions that discouraged overtime, even if they worked long hours. Adams also accused the team in the complaint of discriminating against her because of her race and retaliating against her after she reported concerns about pay disparity and unequal treatment.
Similar to Ventrelle, Adams also said Davis didn’t allow anyone to speak their mind, and if they did they’d be fired.
“If anyone complained, they were let go.”
Adams in an article from Sports Illustrated.
Following the backlash, Davis announced Sandra Douglass Morgan as the new Raiders President. She made history by being the first Black woman to assume the role in the NFL. While she was more than qualified, it almost seemed like Davis did it to get the weight off his shoulders.
Adams expressed this by saying, “I just hope that the new president is the person who is truly going to improve the culture of the team, and not just a figurehead put in place to take the heat off of them.”
I don’t know what kind of operation Mr. bowl cut thinks he’s running, but it’s clearly toxic. Davis took over ownership in 2011 after his father, Al Davis passed. Since then, the Raiders have had seven different head coaches. They’re on their third general manager and don’t get me started on the awful draft picks.
The Raiders can get a new coach or a new quarterback, but the results will be the same. Allegiant Stadium can’t cover up the years of screw-ups from Davis. Unless he sells the team, the Raiders’ loop of mediocrity will only continue.
