Ohio State Hires Former Patriots DC Matt Patricia For DC Role

Hey Siri, show me an example of a downgrade. That’s what we are looking at in spades here, as the Ohio State Buckeyes and Ryan Day have hired former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia for their defensive coordinator role, per Pete Thamel. The move is on the heels of Ohio State losing their defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ surprising move to conference rival Penn State.

I guess I just don’t follow the thought process here with this one. I understand that Matt Patricia is a Super Bowl champion with the Patriots, but are we just going to look over his last *real* job in the NFL, when he took over the Detroit Lions as their head coach in 2018, going 13-29-1 and got canned in his third season? I know he can coach on the defensive side of the ball and all, and the Knowles move came late in the coaching cycle so options were limited, but I find it hard to believe there wasn’t a better candidate than Patricia out there.

The clear answer to me would have been to promote secondary coach Tim Walton to defensive coordinator, not co-defensive coordinator. The Buckeyes allowed the third-fewest passing yards in the country last season, led in large part to the job that Walton did. Apparently, Ryan Day disagrees.

Maybe Matt Patricia will be a good hire for Ohio State. Maybe I am just being a hater on the move. But I typically am more of a fan of schools making moves internally, or even hiring rising candidates at the college level than trying to poach an NFL name or revive the career of one that might already be over. This Buckeyes defense is losing a handful of key players in this draft cycle, so it will be fascinating to see how well this unit plays in 2025.
