Northwestern Fires Pat Fitzgerald Amid Hazing Scandal

Pat Fitzgerald has coached his final game for Northwestern. Did anyone have fired because of a hazing scandal on their bingo card five years ago? Well, that’s exactly what happened. Amid the scandal, Northwestern has parted ways with head coach Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald, 48, was originally suspended for two weeks. Now he’s out entirely. The student newspaper at Northwestern was the first to break the story. In case you have been living under a rock and have no idea how we got to this point, I’ll let them to do the rest of the reporting. They were there on the scene collecting facts and know better than anyone what was going on. Here is a link to the story by the student-led newspaper.

Something to keep in mind, Fitzgerald was in the second year of a 10-year, $57 million contract with the University. He’s also been the coach there since 2006 and has received past interest to make the jump to the NFL.

One of the predictions in my hot takes post was the under win total for Northwestern. Losing Fitzgerald this close to the season likely doesn’t help their chances of surpassing that mark. Not like that’s the first thing on the program’s mind anyway given what’s going on there. Who knows if we’ll ever see Fitzgerald coach again but we certainly can’t rule out the possibility of never seeing him on the sidelines again at this point.

Northwestern needs a new head coach for the first time since George W. Bush was the president.
