The grind continues and we are down to crunch time. This past week we were faced with outrageously high temperatures and deer movement, based on my camera data and information gathered from other hunters, was spotty at best.
I did not hunt Monday or Tuesday due to the low forecast and high temperatures and I believe it was a good decision. Wednesday’s forecast called for some drastic temperature changes, almost ten degrees cooler in the morning and 17 degrees cooler in the afternoon. I sat the afternoon on Wednesday and only saw one deer walking in and one deer walking out. The hunters I spoke to had the same types of hunts that I did on Wednesday.
We are in the rut, so why no movement? First of all, I believe the second day of a drastic temperature drop is always better than the first day. Thursday morning my cameras showed more movement and a couple of good to decent buck. Unfortunately, temperatures will rise Thursday afternoon and the forecast is only a 3.2.
I’ll get back to it again, but I truly believe when temperatures and barometric readings are right daylight deer movement is high. However, warm temperatures seem to throw a wrench in my theory. The second and third week of November is always tricky. My number of deer seen during this timeframe in November has always been spotty.
Call it lockdown, call it whatever the hell you want, but normally the second week of November has its ups and downs. Watch this video to help you with hunting in November. I’ll use a quote that I learned from Chris Farley in the movie Tommy Boy: “I can get a good look at a T-bone by sticking my head up a bull’s ass, but I’d rather take a butcher’s word for it.”
Translation: Go sit in your stand.
Alright enough of the negativity, onto the positives with the deer forecast for this weekend. As you can see in the chart below it’s time to get excited like Will Ferrell does in the Elf movie when Santa is coming, “Santa, is Santa here?? I know him!”
We simply could not ask for a better forecast for this weekend and we get the added bonus of hunting on Sunday.
Readings like this in the middle of the rut are what we dream of and this could be your best opportunity to harvest the one you always dreamed of. Temperatures are below the historical average.
Barometric readings are off the chart and the table is set. Make sure you have a seat at the table. Keep in mind that sits and days can be spotty. If it doesn’t happen Saturday, get your ass out there and make it happen Sunday. Sitting longer in the morning can have its advantages.
I trounced all over my woods trying to recover the buck from last week and finally went inside around lunchtime on Saturday. Around 1:30, my wife told me to check out a buck following a doe in the same spot where I just walked for hours. This is also the time of the year when you cannot let the frustration of numerous unsuccessful hunts get the best of you…patience, patience, patience.
