There are few corporations within the video game industry which hold such a hatred of piracy as Nintendo does. The company has been vigilant with cracking down on thefts of its property, with the recent announcement out of Paris yet another example of this attentiveness.
On April 17, the Paris Court of Appeals ordered the read-only memory, or ROM, site Dstorage to take down its catalogue of pirated Nintendo games, in addition to paying almost $514,000 in legal fees and damages. Under French law, Dstorage can try to appeal the decision.
Regardless, Nintendo has already declared the case a victory for the company and a victory in the everlasting fight against piracy, with the company praising the court for its decision.
Nintendo’s crusade against piracy, copyright infringement, and other illegal activities like it, is legendary, with the company’s efforts helping to imprison the ironically named Gary Bowser. Bowser, a hacker known for his work pirating Nintendo games, was sentenced to 40 months in prison back in 2022.
The company also has previously won a case against another ROM website. In 2021, the company won its multi-million dollar lawsuit against RomUniverse. That case ended with the entirety of RomUniverse having to be shut down.
Between all this, Nintendo has often taken steps to stomp on little guys in the piracy world. This has also led to controversy within the Nintendo community regarding the company’s methods in these cases.
Regardless of its policies with how it handles piracy, Nintendo’s steadfast crackdowns on it will only just continue. It’s clear the company wants to make video game pirates weary of ever trying to steal the company’s intellectual property.
