This wasn’t exactly a secret but now it’s official. The Jets have been shopping Nikolaj Ehlers but now they’re not going to have a choice but to move him. Reports have indicated that Ehlers has told management he has no interest in signing an extension with the team.
David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period had this to say in his latest column:
“The 28-year-old Dane is set to earn $6.75 million in actual salary in 2024-25, though his cap hit is $6 million. He owns a 10-team no-trade list and word out of Winnipeg is that while he has not requested a trade, he would welcome a move.”
“According to a well-placed source close to the Jets, Ehlers is not interested in signing a contract extension with the club and that is primarily why Winnipeg GM Kevin Cheveldayoff is exploring his options via the trade market.”
“It is unclear if Ehlers would entertain a contract extension – which he would not be eligible to sign until July 1, at the earliest – with a new team as part of a change of scenery but doing so would allow the Jets to maximize a return.”
This really isn’t much different than when the Jets were forced to part with Pierre-Luc Dubois. Nobody wants to play for this irrelevant team especially while getting cheesed with Canadian taxes. The only difference is Dubois is a cancer and Ehlers is a glue guy that contributes in a multitude of ways. Ehlers was a +27 posting 61 points last season. Good luck replacing that guy.
The Jets will have to try to find a team that Ehlers wants to go to that gets an extension done. It’s the best path forward in salvaging his value on the trade block.
