We know Vegas is actively shopping Nicolas Hague, but what can they actually expect in return? It’s a worthwhile question to ask, given that Kelly McCrimmon and the rest of the Golden Knights front office is mulling over that exact same dilemma.
Hague, 26, 6-foot-6, 245, and still carries RFA status. AFP Analytics has Hague pegged at a two-year deal at roughly $2.6 million. That would represent a slight raise on the $2,294,150 AAV he was making on his old deal.
Still, signing Hague to that number feels easier said than done. I’ve been digging into this a bunch, so humor me as I divulge the information I have for you. There’s a reason why Hague’s name is out there. His agent, Murray Koontz, has been trying to generate interest in the player by circulating his name through the media. Given what happened last offseason with the Holloway and Broberg offer sheets, teams seem more adept at pulling the trigger on those sorts of things.
Long story short, Vegas is happy to keep Hague at their number, but if another team comes over the top with an offer sheet, maybe a trade can be worked out in advance. In fact, Vegas may even be pushing for a trade in hopes of recouping more than just a measly second round pick.
Hague isn’t a perfect player. His offense from the blue line is less than ideal. However, he’s big and his reach makes a huge impact in the defensive zone. The question is, how good would he be in an elevated role? He’s mostly played a third pair role with Zach Whitecloud during a vast majority of his tenure in Vegas.
By the way, Vegas enters the offseason with $9.6 million in cap space with seven D already signed for next year. Ben Hutton and or Kaedan Korczak can easily fill that last D spot for Hague. Long story short… a trade is very possible.
The Canadiens, Penguins, and Red Wings have been mentioned as possible landing spots. If you check out the RFA compensation chart, a return for Hague on an offer sheet would likely net back a second round pick. Therefore, it stands to reason that Vegas is probably aiming slightly higher. Likely a flier top six winger and a second round pick? If that offer comes to fruition, a trade seems inevitable.
