With less than 20 hours until the expansion draft protected lists are due, the New York Islanders have traded defensemen, Nick Leddy, to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Richard Panik and a 2021 second-round draft pick. Andrew predicted that Leddy would go to Seattle in the expansion. This move poses a lot of questions.
Leddy has been a key player in pulling the Isles out of their dark ages. He plays deep on the backend and the Islanders lack a bit of consistency in that department.
In the expansion, each team is required to leave one D man unprotected who is under contract. The loss of Nick Leddy, leaves, Pelech, Pulock, and Mayfield. You’d be an absolute bafoon to leave Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, or Scott Mayfield unprotected. That leaves Andy Green and Brayden Coburn. Coburn is 36 and has played 936 NHL games with five different NHL franchises. Greene is 38 and has played 988 games with two franchises. Another big move is on the way and I’m trying my best to type slowly so maybe it’ll happen before I’m finished.
Everyone and their mama knows that the New York Islanders are in quite a shit pickle with their cap space this off-season. Detroit retained 50% of Panik’s salary and Mr. Lamoriello must have performed some magic spell because the Red Wings took all of Leddy’s $5.5 million (AAV) contract. That has obviously freed up some space for New York to re-sign some power players. Power players like Anthony Beauvillier and Casey Cizikas.
