We’re back with some more NHL power rankings! The March edition is especially interesting given we just saw the league’s trade deadline take effect (Check out Andrew’s trade tracker). It did shake a lot of teams up as the NHL saw one of the busiest deadlines in recent memory. So, without further ado, let’s see how the teams stack up from 1-32:
#1. Boston Bruins (Andrew: 1, Trey: 1, Chris: 1)
This is a bit of a yawn. You don’t even need to watch hockey to know that the Bruins are the best in the game right now. And wouldn’t you know it, the rich got richer. They swung for the fences with Dmitry Orlov from the Capitals along with Tyler Bertuzzi from the Red Wings. Not only does this team already hold the eighth highest single-season winning percentage in NHL history, but they also look poised to make a run at the league record of 62 wins in a single regular season. To say this team is cup-or-bust is truly an understatement.
#2. New Jersey Devils (Andrew: 5, Trey: 4, Chris: 3) Average = 4
#3. Toronto Maple Leafs (Andrew: 6, Trey: 3, Chris: 5) Average = 4.67
#4. Carolina Hurricanes (Andrew: 3, Trey: 10, Chris: 2) Average = 5
#5. Vegas Golden Knights (Andrew: 4, Trey: 8, Chris: 4) Average = 5.33
#6. Dallas Stars (Andrew: 2, Trey: 9, Chris: 7) Average = 6
#7. New York Rangers (Andrew: 7, Trey: 5, Chris: 9) Average = 7
The Patrick Kane era in New York hasn’t exactly gone off to a flying start. But they’re in the top ten for their potential. If they hit their stride, especially as the playoffs creep closer, the East should be very worried. They got to the Conference Finals last year due to a great powerplay and elite goaltending. While Igor Shesterkin hasn’t been himself recently, Chris Drury added two explosive powerplay weapons in Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko.
#8. Colorado Avalanche (Andrew: 11, Trey: 2, Chris: 10) Average = 7.67
#9. Tampa Bay Lightning (Andrew: 10, Trey: 6, Chris: 8) Average = 8
#10 Edmonton Oilers (Andrew: 12, Trey: 7, Chris: 6) Average = 8.33
#11. Los Angeles Kings (Andrew: 8, Trey: 11, Chris: 12) Average = 10.33
#12. Minnesota Wild (Andrew: 9, Trey: 16, Chris: 11) Average = 12
#13. Winnipeg Jets (Andrew: 13, Trey: 13, Chris: 14) Average = 13.33
#14. Seattle Kraken (Andrew: 14, Trey: 14, Chris: 15) Average = 14.33
The Kraken are still very much in the playoff race. Despite having a pretty quiet deadline, they have potential to win a playoff series. They should be very excited for next year and beyond with Calder-favorite Matty Beniers leading the way. So far Seattle is off to a great start in the NHL.
#15. Buffalo Sabres (Andrew: 15, Trey: 15, Chris: 16) Average = 15.33
#16. New York Islanders (Andrew: 18, Trey: 17, Chris: 13) Average = 16
You already know my two cents would be in here. The Islanders are 7-1-2 in their last ten games. That includes statement wins over the Sabres and Red Wings. Bo Horvat has been a man on a mission ever since his trade to Long Island. But now comes a big test. Tomorrow (Thursday), the Isles head to Pittsburgh for a critical game against a fellow Wild Card contender in the Penguins. If they can win, especially in regulation, there’s a good chance they could climb up the rankings for April.
#17. Calgary Flames (Andrew: 20, Trey: 12, Chris: 18) Average 16.33
#18 (Tie): Ottawa Senators (Andrew: 16, Trey: 19, Chris: 19) Average: 18 AND Florida Panthers (Andrew: 19, Trey: 18, Chris: 17) Average = 18
#20. Pittsburgh Penguins (Andrew: 17, Trey: 21, Chris: 20) Average: 19.33
#21. Detroit Red Wings (Andrew: 23, Trey: 20, Chris: 21) Average: 21.33
#22. Washington Capitals (Andrew: 21, Trey: 22, Chris: 22) Average: 21.67
#23. Nashville Predators (Andrew: 22, Trey: 23, Chris: 23) Average: 22.67
It’s a weird time to be a Preds fan. While Barry Trotz is returning in a front office role, he will be inheriting a very different team from how this year started. David Poile started a complete fire sale in his final months in charge. However, it may have been the best for all parties involved. Losing fan favorites like Mattias Ekholm, Tanner Jeannot, and Mikael Granlund isn’t easy, but Trotz will have a lot of picks and cap flexibility to work with.
#24. St. Louis Blues (Andrew: 24, Trey: 24, Chris: 24) Average: 24
#25 (Tie): Montreal Canadiens (Andrew: 25, Trey: 26, Chris: 26) Average: 25.67 AND Vancouver Canucks (Andrew: 27, Trey: 25, Chris: 25) Average: 25.67
#27. Philadelphia Flyers (Andrew: 28, Trey: 27, Chris: 27) Average: 27.33
#28. Arizona Coyotes (Andrew: 29, Trey: 28, Chris: 28) Average: 28.33
#29. Anaheim Ducks (Andrew: 26, Trey: 30, Chris: 30) Average: 28.67
#30. San Jose Sharks (Andrew: 30, Trey: 29, Chris: 29) Average: 29.33
#31. Columbus Blue Jackets (Andrew: 31, Trey: 32, Chris: 31) Average: 31.33
#32. Chicago Blackhawks (Andrew: 32, Trey: 31, Chris: 32) Average: 31.67
