Former Barcelona and PSG superstar Neymar has reached an agreement to sign with boyhood club Santos after recently leaving Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. He has signed a six-month contract with the club, keeping him in Brazil through the summer.
Before joining Barcelona as a 21-year-old in 2013, Neymar came through the Santos youth ranks before ultimately making his professional debut for the club in 2009. He went on to make 225 appearances and scored 136 goals before moving to Europe, and will now be returning home after 12 year away.
After having an impressive career with both Barcelona and PSG, Neymar joined Al Hilal in the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2023. However, his time in Saudi Arabia was plagued by injuries and he only made seven appearances before leaving the club this January.
MLS clubs tried to pounce once it was known that he was departing Al Hilal, with the Chicago Fire holding discussions with the now 32-year-old to try to bring him to the U.S.
It was also rumored that Inter Miami would attempt to sign Neymar to reunite him with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba. However, new Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano squashed those rumors, saying it would be impossible to bring him to the club.
“We cannot talk about Ney because we have nothing,” Mascherano said. “Obviously Ney is a great player. Every coach in the world wants him but at the moment, but you know the MLS rules around the salary cap. So for us in this moment, it’s impossible to try to think about him.”
Neymar still has ambitions to return to Europe and will look to do so once his contract with Santos expires this summer.
