Global football phenom Neymar Jr. has called out claims Nike made in The Wall Street Journal on Thursday regarding the split between the brand and the footballer. Nike claims that the brand terminated their relationship over the Brazilian’s unwillingness to cooperate with an internal investigation regarding a sexual assault allegation that was brought to light in 2018 when a Nike employee accused Neymar of forcing himself onto her in his hotel room. I posted about the allegation and the Journal report earlier today:
Nearly 20 hours after the Journal released the report, Neymar responded to claims regarding his split with Nike in an Instagram post earlier today.
Neymar slammed Nike’s statement in his post, and not only denied the sexual assault allegation but denied even knowing the woman in question.
“I’ve never had any kind of relationship or approach from this person. I didn’t even have a chance to talk to her, to know the real reasons for her pain. That person, an employee, was not protected. I, a sponsored athlete, was not protected.”
He also claimed Nike clouded the truth of the entire situation.
“I really don’t understand how a serious company can distort a business relationship that is supported by documents. Written words cannot be altered. They are very clear.
“I remain firm and strong, believing that time, always this cruel time, will bring the true answers.”
Nike has yet to respond to Neymar’s comments.
