Yankees to use openers in attempt to fix Luis Severino

This year has been disappointing for the New York Yankees. They sit at 59-55 and just one game above the last-place Red Sox. Also aiding in the disappointment was the lackluster trade deadline in which Brian Cashman basically made no moves. But out of everyone on this roster, nobody has underperformed as much as Luis Severino, causing the Yankees to get creative in order to try and get him back to “normal.”

They have tried making tweaks to his game in between starts, but clearly, nothing has worked so far. So now the Yankees are thinking of using an opener in the rest of his starts this season.

Severino’s ERA in the first inning is a whopping 13.85, indicating he is clearly struggling to get into a rhythm during his starts. So I guess the thought process is if he can avoid the first couple of innings, maybe he can more easily get into a groove.

I’m not sure if this will work, But for the sake of Luis Severino and the Yankees, it has to work. Severino currently holds a 7.74 ERA. The Yankees have tried basically everything to fix him, but to no avail thus far.

The Yankees too could use some flashes of vintage Severino. Their rotation is hobbled and they have had to rely on their bullpen A LOT over the past few months. Severino probably wouldn’t have a spot in the rotation, if not for all the injuries the Yankees are dealing with.

Baseball is a weird sport and sometimes the most obscure changes are needed for some players.

I’m not sure if this will work out, but at this point, both Severino and the Yankees have nothing to lose. They have tried everything else and desperately need a boost to this rotation.

If that means that Severino has to continue using an opener, I’m sure the Yankees will take it. Because it’s much better than the bullpen he’s been throwing for all of this season.

What do you think? Is this the change Severino has needed all season? Or will this be another failed attempt to fix the once-great pitcher? Only time will tell, but if this doesn’t work, Severino may not have a job in New York for much longer.
