Jets Release Tim Boyle, Sign Brett Rypien

After being the starter for two weeks, the New York Jets released quarterback Tim Boyle with quarterback Brett Rypien being signed to the practice squad. ESPN NFL insider Rich Cimini was among the first to report the news Tuesday.

This entire quarterback room in New York is an absolute mess and the team is just lost. It’s gotten so bad that Zach Wilson has become reluctant to start. Wilson has lost his confidence but also reportedly doesn’t want to get injured behind this broken offensive line. It is very likely that Wilson will be shipped off elsewhere at the end of the year and getting injured on a team that doesn’t really care about you isn’t in his best interest.

Ending ties with Tim Boyle seems to be step one in picking between Wilson or Trevor Siemian for head coach Robert Saleh. Either way, there isn’t much to lose. Both quarterbacks can’t get it done with the team in its current state and it should be time to just call it a season. This whole operation has been run poorly, as they are just patiently waiting for Aaron Rodgers to swoop in and save the day.

Whether it’s Boyle, Siemian, Rypien or Wilson, no one will really get a fair shot. New York’s game last week against the Falcons was hard to watch as neither of the Wilson replacements could get anything going.

I actually don’t even understand how the Jets thought signing Boyle was a good idea. In 20 career NFL games, he has four touchdown passes and 12 interceptions. Looking back at his college stats, it is hard to believe that Boyle even got an opportunity in the NFL; he threw one touchdown and 13 interceptions in three seasons at UConn. In one season with Eastern Kentucky, he threw 11 touchdowns to 13 interceptions.

This revolving door of quarterbacks in New York just sums up the state of the team. Poor leadership and relying far too much on Aaron Rodgers got them here. They better get as much out of Rodgers next season as they can because many people’s jobs depend on it.
