Have The New York Jets Finally Turned A Corner In 2021?

The New York Jets have had some rough seasons this past decade. They have been in quarterback limbo, cannot get the coaching pick right, and have gotten dominated in their own division. After firing Adam Gase, drafting another quarterback, and having a sense of direction, have the New York Jets finally turned a corner?

Hired Robert Saleh

Saying Adam Gase was a disaster might be the understatement of the century. The guy was clearly over his head and could not “rally the troops.” The Jets needed a grownup at head coach, and they may have found it in former 49ers’ DC Robert Saleh. Saleh served as the DC under Kyle Shanahan for the past four years in San Francisco and appears to know what he is doing.

He has a ton of energy, and getting an endorsement from Kyle Shanahan is a pretty good thing to have on the résumé. Now it is only training camp, and Saleh is coaching in one of the best-coached divisions in football. He is going to be put to the test against three of the best defensive minds in football in Bill Belichick, Sean McDermott, and Brian Flores.

Supporting The Young Quarterback

The Jets drafted their second top-five quarterback in three years: Sam Darnold in 2018 and Zach Wilson in 2021. While I have my reservations about Wilson, the kid has some talent and a hose of an arm. What the Jets have done with Wilson in the span of four months is more than they did for Sam Darnold in three years.

On a consistent basis, Darnold was running for his life behind a poor offensive line, and when he got time to throw, other than Robby Anderson, he had no one to throw to.

In a span of about five months, the Jets have surrounded Wilson with a competent offensive line and formidable weapons. They drafted tackle Mekhi Becton in 2020 and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker in 2021, both massive upgrades from their previous offensive lineman. They also drafted WR Elijah Moore and RB Michael Carter in 2021. Side note, Moore has a chance to be a special receiver in this league. They also signed Corey Davis to a huge contract to give Wilson another outside threat.

Joe Douglas Is A Competent GM

Joe Douglas has provided some stability to the New York front office. He was hired in July of 2019 and has drafted well and made some good personnel moves. Douglas also hired Robert Saleh, and I think it’s important to note Douglas did not hire Adam Gase.

I still don’t think this team is going to win many games in 2021, and the defense may be atrocious yet again, but the Jets look to be headed in the right direction. They have bought into Zach Wilson and have committed to supporting the young quarterback. I think Jets fans have something to look forward to in the future.
