Today’s State of Play proved that Resident Evil lives on! The announcement of a new title in the iconic survival horror franchise was hands-down the most exciting news from State of Play. And with Sony also announcing fresh entries for Street Fighter and Final Fantasy, that’s really saying something.
As a highlight from their 30-minute presentation, Sony gives fans the first look into the latest title of the franchise: Resident Evil 4 Remake.
With Capcom’s latest agenda of revamping the franchise’s origins, it was only a matter of time before they arrived at Resident Evil 4. The 2005 title practically revolutionized the survival horror genre, setting the gold standard for everything that would follow. Its “over the shoulder” spin on the third-person shooter quickly became a staple of its era.
Resident Evil 4 influenced countless franchises, from Gears of War to Batman: Arkham Asylum. And its camera style served as the basis for Capcom’s previous Resident Evil remakes. Both RE 2 and RE 3‘s remakes borrowed its “over the shoulder” gameplay and to great effect.
For many fans of the franchise, this Remake has been a long time coming.
Right now the biggest piece of information we can provide is the release date: March 24, 2023.
That’s a full three years since the last remake, RE 3 (2020), hit stores nationwide. We certainly are a ways off from RE 4. But hopefully the extra development will result in a more substantial title than the last. RE 3 released only a year after its predecessor RE 2 (2019), but as a result Capcom cut a lot of content from the original. So this one will need all the time it can get if Capcom wants to do justice to the original, especially since its a remake.
In a recent PlayStation Blog, we learned that the game will reimagine its storyline, modernize graphics, and update its controls while “keeping the essence of its [original] direction”. Fans can only hope that the remake is a success similar to the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 2 Remake.
