The New Orleans Saints are expected to hire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as the team’s next head coach, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report Saturday night.
Moore, 36, can’t officially be hired until after the Super Bowl Sunday because he will be coaching in the game. With Philadelphia, he helped engineer a top-10 scoring offense with one of the league’s most potent rushing attacks behind dynamic running back Saquon Barkley.
Since his playing career stopped after the 2017 season, Moore has been one of the league’s foremost rising offensive minds with coordinator stops in Dallas, Los Angeles and now Philadelphia.
He’s an innovative offensive mind and would be an immediate upgrade over the Dennis Allen and Darren Rizzi experience, respectfully. New Orleans is in perpetual cap purgatory and is projected to be $54 million below the cap, which it will have to figure out (again). Free agency and the draft–the Saints own seven draft picks, including the No. 7 overall pick–will dictate a ton, but I am fascinated by how the offense will be constructed with Moore. Expect Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed to be maximized, among others.
Ironically enough, current Saints starting quarterback Derek Carr played against Moore when Carr was at Fresno State and Moore was at Boise State when both teams were in the WAC. Let’s just say that Boise got the best of Fresno in their 2011 meeting, winning 57-7 with Moore throwing for 254 yards and three scores.
For the time being, it will be up to Moore to empty the clip ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl. What do you think about this hire? Let us know in the comments!
