After suffering their seventh straight loss Sunday, the New Orleans Saints have fired head coach Dennis Allen, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported Sunday.
There has not been an interim announced at the time of this publishing, but NFL insider Dianna Russini notes that special teams coach Darren Rizzi is a “strong option” for consideration.
Allen got the axe as a result of Sunday’s 23-22 loss to the lowly Carolina Panthers, one of the worst teams in the NFL who, in fact, tied New Orleans for last place in the NFC South as a result. New Orleans out-gained Carolina by 150 yards on both the ground and through the air while also winning the turnover battle, but still couldn’t snap a lanky six-game losing streak.
Allen went 18-25 in three seasons with the Saints, having gone 7-10 and 9-8 over his first two seasons, respectively. In six seasons as head coach, the 52-year-old’s gone a ghastly 26-53 (.329), the worst winning percentage for an active head coach in the NFL and the 16th-worst in NFL History, sandwiched in between John McKay and Mike Nolan.
The New Orleans Saints are currently slated to have a top-3 pick in the 2025 draft with the Trade Deadline coming Tuesday. Their cap situation is the worst in the NFL–they’re projected to be $61.5 million below the cap in 2025, with no other team below $4 million–so who knows whether or not they will look to part with pieces for additional Day 2 or 3 capital.
