The New NBA CBA Has A Years Of Service Problem

Adam Silver’s wet dream is going to have a lot of unintended consequences that people don’t even see coming yet. One of many includes a major years of service problem that’s going to tank the quality of the league in a big way forever, unless serious changes are made.

Shout out to Jackson Law for creating this post, too, that ties right into this. If you want to check out his piece, make sure to do that here!

This CBA is idiotic for so many different reasons, but one that won’t get talked about enough is the Bambi effect that’s going to happen within the league. Teams really have no alternative in terms of improving their team now. The only thing they can do is find young, cheap players and throw them into the fire, hoping they can contribute.

Does Adam Silver understand that this concept is going to push valuable veterans out of the league who otherwise should have jobs on teams?

Does Adam Silver understand that the roster construction of teams is going to force teams to get young and dumber than ever before?

Forget about the broken middle class of contracts. Forget about the fact that we’re deciding literal team builds of rosters because of media voting for awards. All of which are insane sins Silver has created, by the way. I’d argue the biggest unintended consequence of them all is going to be a reduced actual on-court product. When you force more young players onto the court who aren’t ready to play, and fewer people watch because of it… Make sure to look in the mirror.

Not grasping what I’m talking about? Here’s a perfect example.

Kevin Durant makes $55 million next year. Because of the new rules, contenders really have no way to fit him onto their roster.

Still not getting it? Here you go.

  • 0-6 years of service: Eligible for 25 percent of the salary cap.
  • 7-9 years of service: Eligible for 30 percent of the salary cap.
  • 10 or more years of service: Eligible for 35 percent of the salary cap.

The more years of service, the bigger chunk of the pie you can take out of the salary cap. Which makes sense given we want guys to get paid. Except that in itself can make the difference between carrying two extra valuable pieces on your team.

Now consider this. Durant is the upper echelon of the NBA. What about the older vets who can actually help teams? Don’t worry, they either essentially have to take the minimum or are told to go kick rocks. If they’re lucky enough not to have to take the minimum, they have to be ready to uproot their family at any time because their specific contract might be needed for a trade. How anyone thinks all of this is a good idea… I’d argue that person belongs in prison.

Mark my words. The young and dumb era of basketball is coming. Bad shot IQ, horrible overall IQ, and a worse quality level of basketball is coming. Adam Silver might be having a wet dream while he’s asleep at the wheel. Everyone else will suffer the consequences for it. This CBA needs to be nuked ASAP or these consequences will bleed into the quality of the sport.
