On Feb. 21, Microsoft and Nvidia announced an official partnership between the two companies, with Microsoft bringing over dozens of Xbox titles to Nvidia’s GeForce NOW cloud gaming services. Titles like Minecraft and Call of Duty will be available to the service’s users for at least 10 years.
According to an official announcement by Nvidia themselves, under the terms of the agreement, Xbox titles will join much of the rest of the gaming world in both the cloud streaming of titles as well as the cross-compatibility with other hardware linked with Nvidia’s service, including PC, macOS, smartphones and even Chromebooks.
Microsoft hopes this deal will convince gamers and Nvidia of the benefits of growing cooperation across the gaming world.
This deal is a part of a series of deals surrounding Microsoft’s desire to acquire Activision-Blizzard for $68.7 billion — a deal that has raised concerns across the gaming industry — with Microsoft offering up a similar deal to Nintendo alongside the one with Nvidia. However, Sony’s refusal to budge and the European Union’s concerns about monopoly potentially killing the deal outright.
If Microsoft wants this deal to go through, they need as much of the gaming industry on their side as possible.
But even if the acquisition deal falls through, GeForce users will still be able to experience the massive Xbox catalogue for themselves now without needing an Xbox — something that few users of the service will be scoffing at.
