The Last of Us is currently at top of video game company Naughty Dog’s list of priorities, due to the large amount of attention it has received in recent years. With two games and now a highly successful show on HBO, the franchise has risen to new heights of popularity. However, that popularity hasn’t translated over to the possibility of a new game, with The Last of Us 3 not a guarantee, according to insiders within Naughty Dog.
According to co-president Neil Druckmann, while The Last of Us 3 isn’t out of the question, it ultimately depends on whether or not there is a story to tell. According to Druckmann and the developers, The Last of Us 2 had a satisfactory conclusion.
Druckmann highlights this in an interview with Buzzfeed.
“If we can’t come up with something, we have a very strong ending with Part 2 and that will be the end,” Druckmann said.
However, Druckmann has stated in the past that there is some sort of story that could be told. But whether or Naughty Dog would be willing to go on and make a third game is still up in the air. Plus, with the confirmation of a season 2 for the show, it seems that the priority will still be focused on continuing The Last of Us within the realm of TV.
That being said, despite some criticisms, The Last of Us Part 2 was a major success. It seems unlikely that the company would completely halt any further work on Ellie’s story, though only time will tell if another installment will be announced or not.
