Nathan MacKinnon has been training with Mitch Marner this offseason, which is convenient timing considering the Leafs winger is a free agent after the conclusion of this upcoming season. Marner gets a lot of hate but Nate Dog is one of his defenders.
MacKinnon called Marner one of the best the league has to offer.
“He looks awesome,” the Colorado Avalanche superstar said of Marner, according to Daily Faceoff’s Matt Larkin. “He’s always so impressive out there. Even just playing with him (at the 2017 World Championship), he just came off his rookie year. Unreal, just so good, so talented.”
“It’s a hard league to win in and obviously I think Marner gets a lot of flak in Toronto, but he’s honestly one of the best players in the league,” MacKinnon said. “I play with some of the best players in the league, and then I skate with (Marner) and he’s right up there with anyone. Especially at that Vail camp, there’s a lot of good players, and he’s stuck out as one of the best for sure.”
Maybe this is just me but doesn’t it feel like only a matter of time before Marner becomes the next NHL star who is on the recruiting trail? The marriage with the Leafs feels destined to end. Especially if Marner has another quiet playoff with Toronto. He has just 11 playoff goals in 57 games. Could Marner be on the move in free agency? If so, contenders like Colorado and Vegas feel likely to pry him away.
