MLB Home Run Derby: Are The New Rule Changes For The Better?

I don’t know what it is but I’m a sucker for the MLB Home Run Derby. It’s by far the best part about the All-Star break in baseball. The problem is in recent years, it’s become a spamming fest as the sport’s obsession with adding a clock becomes weirder and weirder.

The 2024 iteration of the event will have new rule changes and they all seem like positive additions. Pitchers are always an underappreciated part of this event so make sure to get your Baseball Pitcher Bets in too!

I still hate the clock part of it. It’s way too rushed for no reason. However, I’ll say that adding the outs back in is a huge plus. Before there was literally no limit on how many pitches it could be. You just had guys spamming as many swings as they could. Now outs and number of pitches are added. It should make for a much better-paced event.

They also seem to have fixed the first round. The format they had last year was so dumb. Making it top 4 advancing is the way to go. Some guys in the past would go out there and crank out a bunch of homers and still not advance because the player they were facing happened to get one more. It never made any sense. This is at least a positive combination of the two.

I’m not sure the event will ever have the same ambiance again as when Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa were crushing bombs but at least this year won’t look like it was by a bunch of TikTokers.
