I watched the Brad Stevens exit interview, and I had one major takeaway… the guy doesn’t have a clue what to do right now. It was a lot of “need more time” and “we’ll put our heads together and talk about it”. It stinks of a guy who has been cornered, and everyone with an ounce of brain power knows it.
I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. Stevens inherited this team. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown were Danny Ainge draft picks. So was Payton Pritchard. So were all of the guys like Marcus Smart and Robert William,s who were used to acquire the side pieces that put this team over the top. Historically great turned into a second round exit because of bad culture and bad leadership.
Plus, it’s plainly obvious that Stevens doesn’t understand anything about true team building because he would have more than a “we need more time” approach. He doesn’t understand pivot points, and it couldn’t be more obvious.
Crown this man all you want. You can’t hide the evidence. Ime Udoka had as much to do with Derrick White if not more. Jrue Holiday never happens without Milwaukee doing the wrong thing. The Kristaps Porzingis trade was smart, but let’s be real… the player he traded for failed the physical and forced a hirewire act that forced him to lie about Marcus Smart.
You call this man a basketball genius? A lot of that stems from being a boy wonder coach at Butler. He’s living off past glory masked in disguise. Let’s say I’m wrong. He really is smart. Navigating this tax situation puts him right on the spotlight, and we both know he’s writing checks he knows he can’t cash.
He’s got one move. It’s a trade for Giannis. CBA kills the middle class. The depth pieces like White and Holiday, are pieces they can’t afford to keep. CBA lets you have a steak, lobster, two sides, and then you’re told to figure it out from there. Boston can’t make the sides any better. You have to make the steak and lobster better. The only way to do that is by moving Jayson Tatum in a Giannis trade.
A: This Giannis thing is a once-in-a-decade opportunity.
B: You can’t get a better player than Giannis—period.
C: The Bucks will do right by Giannis and he can’t do better than what you have to offer. Reunites with Jrue Holiday, who he trusted more than anyone in Milwaukee. Team structure allows Giannis to play his best basketball ever. Never has to shoot a 3 again. Boston gives him his best shot at another ring and he knows it. Derrick White makes everyone better. Joe Mazzulla has the psycho energy Giannis can match.
D: Starters: Holiday, White, Brown, Giannis, ?
Bench: Pritchard, Horford, Baylor Scheierman, vet minimums.
That team can win the title. This is your window.
E: Brad Stevens’ legacy hinges on whether he can act decisively in a moment like this. If he misses this opportunity, the genius label will vanish. My best guess is he sells off the sides in a Warriors style tank but fails to realize that even if those picks hit (huge maybe given that Jordan Walsh is his one draft pick on the roster) Brown and Tatum will be in their 30’s and it won’t be enough to win.
F: Call Danny Ainge. He will take Zingis off your hands in the three team trade. I promise he will get this deal to go through. Helps everyone and he wants to see Boston thrive if you simply remind him the Lakers got Luka.
The choice is yours. You can either listen to Trey or suffer the consequences later.
