The 2023-24 Boston Celtics Are A Historically Great Team

The 2023-24 Boston Celtics are NBA Champions! The C’s have officially lifted the Larry O’Brien Trophy and Banner 18. On a night that caps off the NBA Season, let’s make sure we remember this team correctly. This team is historically great and should remind people of another recent championship team in Boston.

Doesn’t anybody have flashbacks to the 2018 Red Sox? Because that Sox team is a perfect comparison for this Celtics team. I have a write-up on the perfect storm that became the 2018 Red Sox. If you’re looking for spark notes, it was a team littered with young talent. Then Dave Dombrowski came in and aggressively put his spin on an eventual wrecking ball team that wouldn’t be stopped.

I can remember it like it was yesterday. Everyone who was uneducated kept talking about how the Red Sox need to trade their young players so they can win. People forget how stupid they truly were. Big time reporters blasted the Red Sox for not trading Mookie Betts and Xander Bogaerts for Cole Hammels (that was a real story…). Instead, Boston wisely kept those player and then Dombrowski piled on top of it with the likes of Chris Sale, David Price, Nathan Eovaldi, etc.

It was the same thing with the Celtics. Over and over again uneducated people tried to break them up. Forget about the fact that Boston was in the Conference Finals when Jayson Tatum was 19. The rest of the NBA fan boys were determined to break this duo up. Thankfully, Danny Ainge and Brad Stevens were never stupid enough to do it.

What happened after created the perfect storm. It was a blend of Ainge and Stevens’ brains. One guy collected all the draft picks and young talent. The other guy dealt the remaining assets away for the right supporting cast. It all came together and this Celtics team, like the 2018 Red Sox, turned into a wrecking ball.

The Celtics finish the 2023-24 NBA Season 64-18 with a postseason record of 16-3. Their +11.4 point differential during the regular season is the 5th best mark ever. Let’s not kid ourselves with this team. They’re historically good. It’s not about if they would beat the 08 team. It’s a matter of if they would beat the KD Warriors and I certainly wouldn’t count this Celtics team out of that hypothetical matchup.
