Just a couple weeks after bringing home the 2021 NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks, forward Bobby Portis has chosen to decline his player option for next season. Had he opted in, Portis would have been payed $3.8M for the 2021-22 season.
Bobby Portis will probably not stay in Milwaukee. The fan-favorite reserve could re-sign, but he is coming off a career year and the most Milwaukee could give him is $5.89M under the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception. Bobby Portis is a high-effort player who shot career highs from the field and three-point range this season at 52.3% and 47.1%, respectively. He averaged 11.4 points to go with 7.1 rebounds in possibly the best season of his seven-year career.
After the title run, Bobby Portis indicated that Milwaukee would be somewhere he’d like to stay. What he did not mention, though, was that the Bucks will be unable to pay him what his abilities are worth. His combination of toughness, defensive ability, and three-point shooting don’t come along in reserve players very often. The open market is the best option for Portis’ self interests.
NBA free agency begins on August 2. Milwaukee fans will be sad to see him go, but there will likely be a long line of NBA teams for Portis’ services.
