Mike Zimmer is joining the Dallas Cowboys as their newest defensive coordinator, according to Tom Pelissero.
Zimmer will join Mike McCarthy’s staff and replace Dan Quinn, who left Dallas to become the latest head coach of the Washington Commanders.
Mike Zimmer, 67, will return to the Cowboys where he served from 1994-2006, which also included the defensive coordinator position. Zimmer served as a defensive assistant in 1994, the defensive backs coach from 1995-1999.
Before the move to Dallas, Zimmer’s last stint as a coach in the NFL came with the Minnesota Vikings as their head coach. Serving from 2014-2021, Zimmer had a record of 72-56-1 during his time in Minneapolis. The 72 wins puts Zimmer as the third-winningest coach in the teams’ history.
Before hiring Mike Zimmer as their DC, the Cowboys also interviewed former Commanders head coach Ron Rivera, former Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan and also tried for an internal hire by interviewing their defensive line coach Aden Durde and secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr. — Whitt Jr. canceled the interview and followed Quinn to Washington and became their defensive coordinator.
If McCarthy were to give the Cowboys another disappointing playoff run, Mike Zimmer could find himself in the running for the Cowboys head coaching spot if he were to keep the defense strong.
