Mike Vrabel interviewed with the Jets on January 3rd, 2025. Then, two days later, before the Patriots could even take their pads off in the locker room, the Patriots fired Jerod Mayo. Granted the decision was probably a done deal already as the Patriots did not do well this season and have the 4th pick in the 2025 NFL draft. Maybe there was a chance for Jerod Mayo to keep his job. After all, he was handpicked by Bill Belichick to coach the Patriots after his departure. However, the rumblings that Mike Vrabel have been deafening and he might be the hottest name on the head coaching market right now. Throw in the that Mike Vrabel interviewed with the Jets, and well that puts all the pressure on the Patriots to make a decision.
While the timing is eerie by itself, don’t take my word for it, CBS NFL reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala heard this as well as she reported it on Twitter/X:
There’s an obvious connection between Mike Vrabel and the Patriots as Vrabel is a 3-time Super Bowl Champion with the Patriots. He knows the organization, and while Bill Belichick is at UNC now, he knows how the Patriots are expected to be run. I think he wants the Patriots job as much as the Patriots wants him. The whole reason I think he even decided to interview with the Jets is as the report stated, just to put pressure on New England. Do I think it was a bluff? Absolutely. No shot that a head coach that has good experience and is not desperate for a job is dying to go to New York to coach the Jets with enough headaches of their own. The Patriots is a much better job with organizational stability, a better draft pick, and a clear option at QB. The Jets have none of those things.
While I don’t think Jerod Mayo did terrible, especially as a first-time head coach, it’s a cutthroat league and if you can upgrade at head coach with a guy who wants to coach your team, you’re out of there. I think Jerod Mayo will get another shot and soon somewhere in the NFL, but all signs lead to Patriots focusing on Mike Vrabel as a head coaching candidate.
