Mike Greenberg to Become Lead Host of ESPN’s NBA Countdown

Longtime ESPN personality, Mike Greenberg, is preparing to become the lead host of the network’s primetime professional basketball show, NBA Countdown, as first reported by the New York Post’s Andrew Marchand. The former co-host of Mike & Mike on ESPN radio and the current host of Get Up! is filling the position left by Maria Taylor. Taylor’s departure led to a total upheaval of NBA coverage within the network and she has since joined NBC Sports.

With the new role, Greenberg will be alongside various analysts and personalities, most notably Stephen A. Smith, Magic Johnson and Jalen Rose, throughout the 82-game NBA regular season and postseason. This is Greenberg’s first pregame program for the network.

Rose is the only remaining panelist from last year’s show, with Taylor, Jay Williams and Adrian Wojnarowski all removed from their posts. However, according to Marchand, Wojnarowski will continue to make appearances on the show, but in a role limited to breaking news. Malika Andrews and Marc Spears will maintain their reporting roles on NBA Countdown, per the report.

ESPN declined to comment to the New York Post.

The sports media giant has had to hit the reset button regarding its NBA coverage following comments made by former host Rachel Nichols in 2020. Nichols, who was jockeying for NBA postseason coverage duties with Taylor, implied in a private, but recorded, conversation with a friend that the latter personality was given Finals coverage because of her race. Nichols is white, while Taylor is Black. Negotiations over the summer between ESPN and Taylor fell through, meanwhile Nichols was subsequently pulled from all on-air programming, including her show The Jump.
