Mike Evans praises Johnny Manziel for discussing mental health struggles

The Johnny Manziel Netflix documentary, Untold: Johnny Football, has provided a deep dive into the wild career of one of the most polarizing athletes in recent memory. The documentary revealed a lot of insane stories about Manziel’s career. One of the saddest was his struggles with mental health issues; however, former college teammate and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans praised Manziel for his willingness to discuss the subject.

Evans discussed Johnny Manziel’s openness of his mental health struggles in an interview with Jenna Laine of ESPN. All quotes via TheScore.

“I thought it was very noble of him to do what he did, ’cause it takes heart to, like, admit a lot of that stuff,” Evans said, according to ESPN’s Jenna Laine.

Manziel discussed his mental health struggles in great detail throughout his documentary. The former college football superstar stated that he attempted suicide after being by the Cleveland Browns and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

“I knew he was in a very dark place; I didn’t know about that,” Evans said of Manziel. “I care about him, but, you know, I didn’t know about his suicide attempt. That was news.”

Johnny Manziel and Mike Evans had some outstanding years together with the Aggies. Evans complied 151 receptions for 2,499 yards and 17 touchdowns with Manziel as his quarterback across two seasons. At the end of the day, Evans was the one that stuck in the NFL.

“He’s a super-talented guy,” Evans said. “I mean, obviously his time, it came and gone, gone real fast, and that’s hard for people to deal with. Especially, he’s like the first of his kind–a rockstar (college) quarterback who’s hanging with all celebrities. That’s like the first of his kind, so he was in a tough spot early on.”

Manziel certainly had a wild football career. The Heisman Trophy winner had college notoriety like few athletes ever had. That level of pressure certainly weighed on him throughout his playing days.
