The youth movement at the running back position at the NFL level continues. Another competent running back is calling it quits at the age of 31. Technically 30 since Davis was not on an NFL roster last year. The former South Carolina product posted on social media regarding his decision.
“As I turn 31 today, I sit back and look on my NFL career and how thankful I am to be [a part] of a brotherhood,” Davis posted. “This game has allowed me to make a lot of friends and memories. I’m grateful for every organization in [the] NFL. With that being said I’m retiring!”
Davis, a 4th round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, will finish his career with 2,052 rushing yards with 14 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 171 passes for 1,066 yards with four scores in 87 career games. The 49ers drafted Davis but never had much success there. Davis only had 54 carries with the team that drafted him.
His best season was the 2020 campaign for the Carolina Panthers when Christian McCaffrey got hurt. That season, Davis accounted for 1,015 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns for the Panthers. He was a fantasy darling for many including myself that year.
Beyond the 49ers and Panthers, Davis also played for the Seahawks, Bears, Falcons, and Ravens. 18 total yards with Baltimore in 2022 turned out to be the end for Davis.
Whatever the journeyman running back does next, we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
