Michigan Promotes Sherrone Moore to Head Coach

The University of Michigan has named Sherrone Moore the head football coach, according to Adam Schefter. The offensive coordinator and former interim head coach will take over for Jim Harbaugh as he leaves for the NFL.

Moore gained national recognition in his time as Michigan’s interim head coach during Harbaugh’s three-game suspension. In that span, Moore kept Michigan afloat and helped lead the team to wins over Penn State, Maryland, and Ohio State.

Moore has been one of Michigan’s top assistant coaches during his time with the Wolverines. In 2018, he joined the staff as a tight end coach before becoming the offensive line coach in 2020. In his three years leading the offensive line, the group won the Joe Moore Award twice. More importantly, that position unit was the biggest strength of Michigan’s National Championship run. Moore was also Michigan’s offensive coordinator in the Championship season and spent two years as the co-offensive coordinator previously.

Moore should help the Wolverines remain stable in Harbaugh’s absence. This move helps minimize the amount of staff and player turnover. As the head coach, Moore should immediately work to ensure his staff and roster stays in Ann Arbor.

In terms of culture, Moore will likely attempt to continue Michigan’s dominance in the trenches. As a player, he was an offensive lineman and that is reflected in his coaching. That should continue as he becomes Michigan’s head coach.

Moore is generally considered a quality recruiter. That will go a long way as a head coach. On the recruiting trail, he was the primary recruiter for J.J. McCarthy and Daxton Hill. The fact that Moore secured those commitments should provide optimism that Michigan can maintain its current recruiting level.

As a head coach, Moore will need to prove that he can lead a team without Harbaugh present. In the modern era of college football, he will also need to show that he can acquire talent, maintain a roster, and develop players. Only time will tell if Moore will be able to handle being a full-time head coach. It is certainly a complex and demanding job.
