Michael Carter Could Be A Steal In 2021 Fantasy Football

Michael Carter and Javonte Williams were an elite running back duo at UNC in 2020, combining for 2,385 rushing yards and 33 touchdowns. Williams was selected in the second round to the Broncos while Carter fell to the fourth round to the New York Jets, but with no established running back on the Jets roster, Carter could wind up winning the job and he could have huge fantasy potential in 2021.

While Javonte Willimas was the power back, breaking nearly 70 tackles last season, Carter’s game is smooth. He is elusive, has plenty of speed, and has the ability to be active in the passing game. Check out his draft profile by Uncle Trey, as he goes more in-depth about Carter’s strengths and weaknesses.

One aspect of the Jets that is beneficial to Carter’s fantasy production is the running back depth, or rather, lack thereof. Tevin Coleman is washed and cannot stay healthy, La’Mical Perine is unproven, and TY Johnson is a complete unknown. With such a lack of intriguing substitutes, I expect Carter to be the starting back sooner rather than later.

Another plus for Michael Carter is the Jets’ offensive line. The Jets have an abysmal roster but their o-line is formidable: Mekhi Becton is a monster, the team traded up to draft Alijah Vera-Tucker from USC, and Morgan Moses is a fine right tackle. And because a better offensive line equals a better running game, Carter will see greater opportunity behind the Jets’ stout offensive front.

The downside for Carter is that the Jets suck. I doubt they win more than five games this season and they will be trailing in almost every game they play. Teams down two or more scores essentially have no choice but to air the ball out, which takes away from RB opportunities. Although the Jets made a mistake drafting Zach Wilson, he has a hose of an arm and is going to throw the football a lot.

Carter is going to fall in drafts as many simply do not know who he is. Despite his relative anonymity, however, he could end up being a late-round steal and prove to have huge value.
