Mets Eyeing Trade For Alexis Diaz?

Could the Mets replace Diaz with Diaz? The Mets currently have the 9th worst bullpen ERA in baseball right now (4.32) and clearly miss Edwin Diaz who is expected to miss the season after getting injured at the World Baseball Classic. Why not replace Diaz with Diaz? It turns out the Mets might be thinking exactly that. It’s being reported that the Mets are very interested in Reds closer Alexis Diaz.

VIA NY Post:

“According to a source, Mets scouts have been tracking Reds star closer Alexis Diaz, who is 14-for-14 in saves. The Mets’ biggest issue is an underperforming offense. But relief depth is probably issue No. 2, and adding a closer to combine with David Robertson — especially Edwin Diaz’s brother — would be huge.

No trade talk yet, but the resurgent Reds would seek young pitching back.

The trouble is, acquiring the junior Diaz would take a haul of prospects. And the Mets like to keep prospects…”

Diaz, 26, currently sports an ERA of 1.48 and is perfect in save opportunities. David Robertson can still pitch but there are still tons of question marks outside of him. Bringing in Diaz makes a ton of sense to replenish a bullpen that was automatic a year ago. Diaz is also under team control through next year so the acquisition cost won’t be cheap.

I am quite sure brother Edwin would be thrilled to bring his sibling over to the Mets. Alexis would also be the perfect 8th inning guy a year from now. If the Mets want to stay in the mix, this is probably a move they should really consider. If not Alexis Diaz, the Mets likely will need to find a bullpen option somewhere.
