Last week on NBA Shorts, we talk about whether or not Dillon Brooks could become the 3rd piece in Memphis behind Jaren Jackson Jr and Ja Morant. The 3rd year wing out of Oregon continues to improve night after night. The Griz have rewarded Brooks with a fancy new extension. It’s clear that the Grizzlies believe in Brooks long term.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN was the first to report the news:
I can’t help but think about the timing of this deal. Brooks has the comments about him not being able to wait until the team traded Andre Iguodala. Hours after Iggy was moved, the Grizzlies lock down an extension for Brooks. It’s hard to not think about that being factored in here.
I think this was a really good deal for the Grizzlies. Brooks is averaging 16.1 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per night. Brooks is also a really athletic player who can stroke the 3. Brooks is shooting just shy of 40 percent from beyond the arc.
Obviously the Grizzlies are in the thick of the playoff race. This is really about the future. To know that they have Jackson, Morant, and Brooks locked down, fans have to feel great about the future. Possibly making the playoffs is just icing on the cake. Especially for a team that likely won’t have their first round pick this year anyway. The Grizzlies have turned things around quickly. Locking up Brooks to a reasonable contract is just another win for this franchise that has been doing everything right since the new front office took over. Things are looking good for the Grizzlies again.
