Mel Kiper Jr. Has Terrible Idea, NFL Community Responds

Stick to what you know, Mel Kiper Jr. If you are a fan of the NFL, then you are probably aware that scoring is down through the first two weeks of the season. In addition, passing stats have also decreased. This surprises many, as the NFL has implemented numerous rules that favor the offense over the past few years.

Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. had a terrible idea, which he proposed during his appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up,” to remedy this problem. Basically, his brilliant (I’m being sarcastic) idea is to outlaw defenses from lining up with two deep high safeties.

He believes that deep high safeties prevent deep ball, which is one of, if not the most exciting, aspects of the game. If this ban came into effect, the NFL would move away from the run-heavy, dink-and-dunk style of play that has been prevalent through the first two weeks of this season.

The hosts of “Get Up,” Dan Orlovsky, Harry Douglas and Jason McCourty, did not agree with Kiper in the slightest, saying that running the football is a good way to combat a two-high safety formation from the defense.

This was just the beginning of people calling out Kiper for his ludicrous idea. The NFL community took to X to voice their opinions. Analysts and veterans had a universal opinion that Mel’s idea was stupid as all hell. This list includes Louis Riddick, Marcus Spears, Jay Gruden, Chase Daniel, etc.

Some have pointed out that the NFL’s focus on a run-first attack in weeks one and two has been a breath of fresh air from the pass-heavy offenses we have seen in recent years. Many have attributed the poor passing stats and scoring numbers to a bad offensive line and Quarterback play, which go hand in hand a lot of the time. Also, the NFL’s rating isn’t down; therefore, this rule change geared toward the offense is unneeded.
