Mbappé and PSG Set For An Ugly Divorce

Just a day ago, it was looking like this transfer window was about to take another crazy turn. It was reported that Kylian Mbappé had declined a contract renewal with PSG and that the French superstar would be leaving the club this summer.

His current contract is set to expire in 2024. Although there is a clause in his contract that would have allowed him to extend his stay in Paris for another year, he told PSG on Monday that he was not going to do so.

PSG have since insisted that they have no intention of letting Mbappé leave the club on a free transfer and are prepared to sell him immediately.

Real Madrid was believed to be leading the pack, with the club ready to make a bid for Mbappé this summer. Manchester United was also rumored to be preparing a move for the French international.

In a tweet on Tuesday, however, Mbappé called these rumors “lies” and claims that he is “very happy” in Paris.

“LIES. I have already said that I will continue next season at PSG where I am very happy,” Mbappé tweeted.

This is a clear shot at the PSG higher-ups. He appears determined to leave the French capital on a free transfer next summer. This would deprive PSG of a near €150 million transfer fee for Mbappé.

This now makes it three summers in a row of Mbappé-PSG relationship problems. PSG rejected transfer bids from Real Madrid in 2021, and in 2022, it looked almost inevitable that Mbappé would join the Spanish giants on a free transfer before he shockingly renewed his contract with PSG.

Now, it appears as if we have another Mbappé transfer saga on our hands.

It will be interesting who wins out here between club and superstar. Whatever the outcome, one thing has become increasingly clear: Kylian Mbappé and PSG are set for a very ugly divorce.
