Matto Espresso: The $2.50 Cafe
If you’ve been to New York City, then you’ve probably seen a Matto Espresso before. With 20-plus locations in the city, Matto appeared seemingly out of nowhere just last year and has completely impacted cheap eaters all around the city. With its iconic rule that most of the menu is only $2.50, if you order off the app, all New Yorkers have made the swap in their routines from Starbucks to Matto.
With an average pastry and coffee being around $8 at Starbucks, Matto counters that with that pairing being only $5–saving over $1000.
Recently, influencers have flocked to social media to share their new love for this place that’s taken over all New York City blocks. It’s definitely a great gift to the city! But popularity and convenience aside, is this place really worth switching your routine?
The Menu
Their menu varies per store, but generally includes pastries, coffees, sandwiches and more. The most important question is: Do these really live up to the hype?
I would say … absolutely! The vegetarian egg sandwich is perfectly salty and cheesy. It was small but surprisingly filling, and for $2.50, getting a second one will be more in size and still less the price than your average Starbucks sandwich. The cheesy croissant was flaky and moist, just like the other sweet and salty pastries. Plus, the $5 egg salad sandwich was refreshing and creamy, and also very filling. The crunch from the arugula took it to the next level!
This spot makes the perfect morning run coffee shop to get a quick breakfast and caffeine refresher! Save hundreds a year by heading to Matto Espresso.
