Matt Judon Has Been The Best Patriot And It’s Not Close

The Patriots’ 2021 season is off to a rough 2-3 with wins over rebuilding Houston and the dysfunctional Jets. After going on a historic spending spree in the offseason the Pats brought in several new faces. Through five games, fans were hoping for different results. One bright spot on the team who has quickly been dubbed, “the dude with the red sleeves,” is linebacker, Matt Judon. Judon was a part of the most expensive free-agent class in Patriot’s history and through five games, he has earned every penny.

After spending five seasons in Baltimore, Judon signed a 4 year, $56 million contract with the Pats. For a guy who has never had double-digit sacks in a season, I thought the price tag was a little rich. Through five games, Judon has not only been their most consistent defensive player but there is also a solid argument for him to be the team’s MVP.

Judon has 20 total tackles and 6.5 sacks through five games. To put his stats in perspective, Chase Winovich was the Pats leader in sacks in 2020 with 5.5. Through five games, Judon has already eclipsed that number. His impact has gone beyond the stat sheet as he is consistently putting pressure on the quarterback and has become a leader in that Patriots locker room. Judon became a fan favorite last week when he delivered a great quote ahead of Tom Brady’s return to Foxborough.

“He’s the next quarterback we’ve got to play. I know he was in this building for a long time, and what he’s done can never be taken away from the game of football. But it’s not like we’re afraid of what Tom Brady can do. We have to stop their whole offense.”

Guys have gravitated to the former Raven and it is evident he has brought a different energy to this locker room. Third-year linebacker, Josh Uche, said he doesn’t have many role models, but Matt Judon is one of them. Goes to show just how special this guy is.

Bill Belichick may be the greatest football coach ever, but his drafting and personnel decisions have come under fire these past couple of years. It seems he consistently ignores his scouts and personnel people when it comes to the draft and free agency, but I must give him credit on Matt Judon. He has done everything right off the field and his play on the field is a bonus. I’m looking forward to this guy wreaking havoc for years to come.
