Matt Forte Calls The Bears Cheap

Matt Forte Calls The Bears Cheap

Ouch. That’s an insult that even people who are cheap and know it never wants to hear. Roquan Smith needs a new contract and Matt Forte is calling the Bears cheap. Are Forte’s thoughts valid? Does it matter that Smith requested a trade? Either way, the Bears seem to be ripped quite an awful lot by their former players.

“I respect him standing his ground and being like, ‘Look, I need to get paid,’ because you can get hurt any day,” Forte told 670 the Score. “And if you get hurt and they cut you, then they just release you and be like, ‘Well, you’re injured. You’re not the same guy anymore.’ So, you have to use your leverage as a player.

“With Roquan and the Bears, I hope they work it out because he’s been a solid and consistent player for them, and that’s what you look for on a team,” Forte said.

“The Bears, they are definitely cheap, and they give guys a hard time,” Forte said. “I don’t know, they pay a lot of guys who don’t deserve the money and sometimes the guys who do deserve it, they don’t pay them.”

Two things:

A: In case you were curious, the Bears did in fact pay Forte when it was time for him to get an extension. Not that it matters in this situation. Just making it known.

B: Roquan Smith needs to be paid and if the Bears give that guy away for pennies on the dollar it’s a travesty. Fred Warner and Shaquille Leonard both landed big extensions this offseason. No reason Smith shouldn’t receive that kind of deal based on his performance.

Are teams blowing up the Bears’ phone lines? If not, they should be. Smith, 25, is easily the best player on the roster. The former Georgia product has been named to two second-team All-Pro teams and notched 163 total tackles a year ago. Without getting too much further into the stats, there is a reason why this guy went 7th overall. He’s a freak.

Spot on with this post. Roquan Smith was can’t miss in this draft class.

Smith is currently in a hold-in with the Bears into what’s turning into a major preseason storyline. I can’t imagine the fan reaction in Chicago if they somehow botch this trade. Oh, it will get ugly. When is rock bottom for Bears fans and how does it keep getting worse?
