All-Star Third Baseman Matt Chapman has agreed to a three-year, $54 million contract with the San Francisco Giants with Jon Heyman being the first to report. Chapman’s deal will have an opt-out after the 2024 and 2025 seasons.
Chapman brings excellent defense at third base for the Giants being a two-time Platinum Glove winner. Still in the upper echelon finishing in the 87th percentile in outs above average and 12 defensive runs saved according to Statcast last season.
Although, Chapman struggled with the bat for the Blue Jays, with a .240 AVG., 17 home runs, and 66 RBIs. The two previous seasons for him could be a better inclination as to what Giants fans can expect. Splitting that time between Oakland and Toronto Chapman averaged .219, 27 home runs, and 74 RBIs per season. In 2023, Statcast had Chapman in the elite in regards to Barrel, Hard Hit Rate, and Exit Velocity but also his Whiff percentage was 94.6; among the highest. Hopefully, a change of scenery is what he needs.
Toronto will receive a fourth-round compensation pick in the 2024 MLB Draft after Chapman declined their qualifying offer last year.
Matt Chapman’s elite defense and power potential should help bolster that Giants lineup with other new faces in Jorge Soler and Jung Hoo Lee. Reuniting with his former manager Bob Melvin may reopen Chapman’s MVP-caliber play during his five years with the A’s.
The Giants were linked to Chapman all offseason and they got their guy within weeks before Opening Day. That could likely cap off a great offseason for the Giants.
With notable players still without homes in 2024, time is winding down. If Matt Chapman’s contract is anything to go on this may not be the last short-term deal we see for the remaining key signings.
