Mason McCormick 2024 NFL Draft Profile

Next up on the docket is the internet darling, South Dakota State’s Mason McCormick. McCormick has become the talk of the town over the last few weeks based on his RAS (Relative Athletic Score), so that had me wondering what the tape looked like. I think there are a few things to like about him, but I also have a few questions as well. What does his 2024 NFL Draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.

McCormick, a zero-star recruit out of South Dakota, committed to the Jackrabbits all the way back in 2018. He saw regular playing time in 2019 and never really looked back, playing well over 2,000 snaps for the school. Allowing only three sacks during your tenure at any school is very impressive, but you have to wonder about the level of competition he went up against on a week-to-week basis.

This feels very much like a Quinn Meinerz type of situation with Mason McCormick. You have a player from a really small school who tests well really late into the pre-draft process and potentially gets drafted higher than he should. The hands do land pretty consistently in the right spot with decent power. Good kickback shows and really strong getting up to the second level to finish the play. Fairly strong in his upper body, which helps.

It’s a good thing he’s a solid athlete because he can hide the fact he has cement shoes. The feet are just so slow. When you watch him against speed rushers it’s almost hard to watch, he never really wins reps. Not the best acceleration in the world, so pulling plays he tends to run a little behind where his assignment is. The wingspan isn’t stellar, but I suppose Guards don’t necessarily need the longest wingspan.

I have a strange feeling that Mason McCormick is going to go high. Not like the top of the draft high, but someone is going to pull the trigger in the third round, which is a mistake. I have a late fifth or early sixth-round grade on him. He would make a nice bench piece and could potentially fill in decently for an injury, but I just don’t see starter upside.
