According to the New York Post, legendary NBA play-by-play announcer Marv Albert will be retiring after the 2021 season has concluded. This guy is an absolute legend. He’s been calling games since 1963 when he filled in for the then-Knicks announcer, Marty Glickman. Glickman was a New York legend in his own right, but Marv just pushed that guy out of the picture and took over WCBS radio play calling for the Knicks at the age of 21.
Marv Albert will be turning 80-years-old next month, which is astonishing considering he hasn’t skipped a beat in his announcing career. Well, maybe he had a couple of hiccups with the sexual assault lawsuit he was involved in back in 1997. But inside the booth, Albert has left the NBA community and sports media industry with countless memories. He also gave the world his son, Kenny Albert who commentates for several sports, including the NHL, MLB, and NFL.
The most prominent play-calling duo on TNT today is the lethal combo of Marv Albert and Chris Webber. Unfortunately, we may not hear either of their voices for the foreseeable future. The New York Post also reported that Chis Webber will not be calling any playoff games this year amid tense contract negotiations with TNT. Webber has been with Turner Sports since 2008 and it’s looking like he won’t return either. Webber has no plans to step away from the booth, and there is yet to be an announcement about his replacement. Perhaps Grant Hill or Reggie Miller could fill in for Webber alongside Albert for his last dance in the playoffs.
Regardless, Marv Albert’s career as a broadcaster should be celebrated, and reportedly will be celebrated by TNT at some point during the playoffs. TNT reportedly has been contacting various NBA personnel in order to pay tribute to Albert’s career in the coming weeks. I really hope the crowd at his last game chants “YES!!” altogether at the final buzzer.
