Miami Coach Mario Cristobal Has High Praise For QB Tyler Van Dyke
Tyler Van Dyke will be under center for the Miami Hurricanes during the 2022 season. Mario Cristobal, former Oregon head coach, has high praise for the redshirt sophomore signal-caller heading into his inaugural season as Miami’s head coach.
“He’s incredible,” Cristobal said of Van Dyke on The Herd. “I mean, an exceptional leader. He’s a relentless-pursuit-of-excellence guy, his decision making is on point, his accuracy, his arm strength. He understands protections, the run game. He is a complete player. He really is and he’s very mobile. His pocket presence is off the charts. He understands the offense as well as anybody I’ve been around. He reminds me a lot of what we had at Oregon with Justin Herbert. And again, he only played I believe in seven, eight games last year. And you saw Miami’s offense is on a really huge upturn, you know, uptick when he was in there.”

A comparison to Justin Herbert is high praise for any college quarterback. While Van Dyke may not end up being as successful as Herbert, he has proven he is more than capable of leading a college offense and can grow into an elite quarterback
“So we think he’s going to be one of the best players in the country right now,” Cristobal said. “He’s done a great job in the offseason with our team, certainly in spring practice. He was off the charts as a competitor and as a leader, so big things (ahead for Van Dyke).”

This praise isn’t coming out of nowhere. Van Dyke did have a productive 2021 season. In ten games, he threw for 2,931 yards and 25 touchdowns while only throwing six interceptions. Meanwhile, he completed over 60% of his passes.
The young quarterback will have to improve on those numbers if he wants to be considered one of the best in the nation. Currently, he is receiving national recognition but is thought to be just outside the top tier of quarterbacks. Regardless, Van Dyke is a good quarterback for Miami to have under center as they look to improve on their 7-5 record from 2021.
